Local SEO services for small business: what to buy and what to avoid

7 min read

Quick answer: good local SEO services do four verifiable things, maintain your Google Business Profile, build service and location pages that rank, run a genuine review engine, and keep your listings consistent. Anything sold beyond that, submission blasts, activity reports, guaranteed rankings, is usually padding. And if your website lacks proper service pages, fix that first, because no retainer can optimise pages that do not exist.

The local SEO industry has a real product and a lot of imitations of it. Telling them apart is not hard once you know what the real one contains.

What does a genuine local SEO service actually do?

It moves the four levers that decide local visibility. On your Google Business Profile: complete setup, precise categories, weekly activity, photo and Q&A upkeep. On your website: a page for each service and each area you cover, written for buyers and structured for search. On reviews: a repeatable ask process and replies to everything. On citations: your name, address and phone number made identical everywhere they appear.

Notice all four are checkable. You can look at your profile, count your pages, read your reviews, and search your own business name. A provider whose work you cannot verify from your own chair is a provider you cannot hold to account. The full owner-level view of these levers is in our local SEO playbook for small businesses.

What are the red flags in a local SEO proposal?

Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google. A guarantee is either a lie or a bet they make with your money.

Instant results. Honest local SEO shows profile-driven movement in weeks and organic movement in months; the real timeline is laid out in how long does SEO take. Anyone selling page one in a fortnight is selling the invoice.

Activity instead of outcomes. “50 directory submissions, 4 blog posts, monthly report” describes effort, not effect. Ask what enquiries the work produced. Silence is an answer.

A retainer with no foundation. If your site has one thin services page, the honest first step is building the pages, not optimising the ones that are missing.

Should you pay monthly or fix the foundation first?

Foundation first, almost always. The highest-return local SEO spend for most small businesses is a one-off: a website with a proper page for each service, natural pages for the areas you serve, fast, mobile-first and technically clean. That asset then compounds, and this is true whether you trade in one town or across several; a firm serving Halifax and Doncaster needs both to exist as real pages before any retainer can rank them.

That build-first logic is exactly how our web design and SEO service works: the local structure is designed in from day one rather than retro-fitted by the month. Fixed prices, £1,297 for a five-page site and £2,497 for ten pages, live in ten working days, with the on-page SEO included rather than sold back to you later.

Once the foundation exists, much of the monthly work, review asks, profile posts, listing hygiene, is genuinely doable in-house. Start with how to get your business on Google and how to get more Google reviews; between them they cover most of what a basic retainer would bill you for.

How do you measure whether local SEO services are working?

Three numbers, all free to see. Calls, direction requests and website clicks in your Google Business Profile dashboard. Impressions and clicks by query in Google Search Console. And the only number that pays wages: enquiries. A provider who reports rankings but cannot connect them to enquiries is reporting weather, not results.

Birkinshaw Aesthetics is what the connected version looks like: a CQC-registered clinic whose search work was measured in real numbers, 33,915 impressions and a homepage click-through rate lifted from 0.47% to 7.55%, not a ranking screenshot. That is the standard to hold any provider to, including us.

If you want a straight answer on whether you need a service at all, or just the foundation done once and properly, book a thirty-minute call. We will tell you honestly, including when the right answer is doing it yourself.

Common questions

What should local SEO services for a small business include?
Four deliverables you can verify: a Google Business Profile that is complete, correctly categorised and actively maintained; service and location pages on your website built to rank for the searches your buyers actually make; a working system for generating and replying to reviews; and consistent business details across the web. If a proposal cannot name which of those it covers, it is selling activity, not outcomes.
How much do local SEO services cost in the UK?
Ongoing local SEO retainers for UK small businesses commonly run from a couple of hundred pounds a month to over a thousand, and one-off audits sit in the low hundreds. The spread reflects scope, not magic. Before paying monthly for anything, make sure the foundation exists: a site with proper service and location pages. A retainer optimising a site with nothing to optimise is money down the drain.
Are cheap local SEO services worth it?
Usually not, because the cheap end is where the fake deliverables live: directory blasts, spun blog posts, and PDF reports of activity that changed nothing. A small business is better served doing the free fundamentals itself, profile upkeep, review asks, consistent listings, and paying properly once for a website built to rank than paying little and forever for reports.
Can a small business do local SEO without an agency?
A large part of it, yes. Claiming and completing a Google Business Profile, asking every happy customer for a review, and fixing inconsistent listings are free and owner-doable. The part that usually justifies professional help is the website itself: pages that target each service and area properly, built fast and technically clean. Get that once, and the monthly upkeep becomes something you can genuinely handle in-house.
