In short A website that gets visitors but no enquiries usually fails at one specific point, not everywhere at once. Here is how to find the exact leak and fix it, fast.

Here is the honest answer most web designers will not give you, because they want the sale: a website that gets visitors but no enquiries rarely needs rebuilding. It is usually failing at one specific point, not everywhere at once. Find that point, fix it, and the enquiries start arriving from the traffic you already have.

The common culprits are a short list. People cannot tell what you do, or who for, in five seconds. There is nothing that makes you look trustworthy. The call to action is weak or buried. The site is slow or fiddly on a phone. The form asks for too much. Or the traffic was never the right fit in the first place. Your job is not to fix all of them. It is to find the one that is costing you and deal with that.

First, a distinction worth getting straight. Conversion is turning visitors into enquiries. Ranking is getting the visitors in the first place. If almost nobody is landing on your site, you have a ranking problem, and that is a different job covered in [why is my website not ranking](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/journal/why-is-my-website-not-ranking). This article assumes people are arriving and not acting. If you already get enquiries and simply want more of them, read [how to get more enquiries from your website](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/journal/how-to-get-more-enquiries-from-your-website) instead.

## Can visitors tell what you do in five seconds?

Open your homepage and read only the first screen, the bit visible before anyone scrolls. Could a stranger say, out loud, what you do and who you do it for? If the headline is a slogan, a welcome message, or your company name in a nice font, the answer is no, and people are leaving before they even reach the good stuff.

The fix is blunt. Put a plain sentence at the top that names the service, the audience, and the place. "Bookkeeping for trades and small builders across Yorkshire" beats "Your trusted financial partner" every time. Clarity is not boring. Confusion is what loses you the sale.

## Is there any proof you can be trusted?

A stranger has no reason to believe you are any good. If the page is all your own claims and none of anyone else's, you are asking for trust without earning it. Most small business sites have a gaping hole exactly where the reassurance should be.

Add real proof, near the call to action where the doubt lives. Genuine reviews with names, recognisable logos, a number of jobs done, photographs of actual work. When we rebuilt the site for [Procon 24/7](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/work/procon-247), an industrial supplier, part of the work was making the proof and the request to act sit together by product category rather than scattered about. Conversion-engineered design with quote-request forms split by product produced a 37% lift in quote requests within two weeks of launch, part of a programme that drove £1.34M in revenue. Same traffic. Better treatment of it.

## Is your call to action obvious and easy?

Count the clear next steps on your page. Not links. Steps. If a visitor decides, right now, to get in touch, how obvious is the way to do it, and how much work is it? On a lot of sites the answer is a single "Contact" link in the corner and an email address buried in the footer.

Pick one primary action. "Request a quote", "Book a call", "Get a fixed price". Make it a button, in a colour that stands out, repeated down the page so it is always within reach. One strong, repeated call to action beats five competing ones that all whisper.

## Is the site slow or awkward on a phone?

Most of your visitors are on a phone, on patchy signal, with little patience. If your page takes four seconds to show anything, a real chunk of them are gone before they see a word. Open your own site on your phone, off wifi, and actually wait. Then try to tap the buttons and fill the form with your thumbs.

Google's own [page experience guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/page-experience) is a useful yardstick here. The usual offenders are huge unoptimised images, heavy sliders, and a pile of tracking scripts. Strip the weight, compress the images, and a slow page becomes a fast one. Speed is not a luxury. It is the price of being read.

## Are you getting the wrong visitors?

Sometimes the site is fine and the traffic is the problem. If your visitors arrive from a viral blog post, a cheap ad, or searches that have nothing to do with what you sell, they will never convert, because they were never going to buy. No headline fixes a mismatch of intent.

Look in your analytics at which pages and search terms bring people in, then ask whether those people actually want what you sell. If your enquiries-per-visitor is fine but your absolute numbers are low, you may need better-qualified traffic, which is where [website design and SEO](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/website-design-and-seo) earns its keep, pulling in people who are already looking for you.

## How to find your specific leak

Stop guessing and watch. Install a free session-recording tool like Microsoft Clarity, leave it a week, and watch real people move through your site. You will see exactly where they hesitate, where they scroll past the thing you thought was obvious, and where they give up. It is uncomfortable viewing, and it is the most useful hour you will spend on the site all year.

Then change one thing. The biggest leak first. Clearer headline, or visible proof, or one strong call to action, or a faster mobile load, or a shorter form. One change at a time, so you can actually tell what moved the number. Conversion work is fast precisely because it is small. You are not rebuilding the site. You are fixing the one place it leaks.

If you would rather someone with fresh eyes find the leak for you, [book a website review](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/website-review) and we will do a free thirty-minute look at where your site is losing enquiries, no rebuild required. And if you suspect the real issue is that too few people are arriving at all, [why is my website not getting enquiries](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/journal/why-is-my-website-not-getting-enquiries) walks the same ground from the traffic side. If you want the figure up front, [ask on the audit call](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/contact) and you will have it that day.

**01 Why is my website not converting?**

Because it is failing at one specific point in the visitor's journey, not everywhere at once. The usual culprits are a handful: people cannot tell what you do in five seconds, there is no proof you can be trusted, the call to action is weak or hidden, the site is slow or awkward on a phone, the form asks too much, or the traffic was never the right fit. The skill is finding which one is costing you, then fixing that one thing rather than rebuilding the lot.

**02 What is a good conversion rate for a small business website?**

For a service business, somewhere between two and five percent of visitors making an enquiry is a reasonable working benchmark, and good sites push higher. But a single benchmark is less useful than a trend. Track your own rate over time and watch it move as you fix things. If you are sitting near zero with real traffic arriving, something specific is broken, and that is fixable.

**03 Why do I get traffic but no enquiries?**

Traffic without enquiries is a conversion problem, not a traffic problem, so adding more visitors just makes the leak more expensive. The visitors are arriving and the site is failing to turn them into action. Check the order of culprits: clarity of offer, visible trust, an obvious call to action, mobile speed, and form friction. One of them is almost always the cause.

**04 How do I improve my website's conversion rate?**

Find the leak before you touch anything. Watch real visitors with a session recording tool, look at where they drop, and check the obvious failure points in order. Then fix the single biggest one: a clearer headline, visible proof, one strong call to action, a faster mobile load, or a shorter form. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what actually worked.

**05 Is it my website or my traffic that is the problem?**

Check your visitor numbers first. If you have real traffic but almost no enquiries, the website is the problem and more visitors will not fix it. If you have barely any visitors at all, that is a ranking problem and a different job entirely. Most small businesses that complain about conversion actually have enough traffic to be getting some, which points the work squarely at the site.
