In short Google Ads answers people already searching; Meta Ads interrupts people who were not. Which suits your local service, and how to test it fairly.

For most local services the answer turns on one question: is your customer already searching? Google Ads captures demand from people typing a need into Google right now, so it usually suits urgent trades. Meta Ads creates demand by showing visual offers to people who were not looking, which suits considered, visual services better.

That is the short version. The two platforms also produce different kinds of lead, need different tracking and fail in different ways. I run both myself for UK service businesses: [Google Ads management](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/ppc-management) for search and [Meta Ads management](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/meta-ads-management) for Facebook and Instagram. I have a published Google Ads result and no published Meta Ads case study, and I will be clear about which is which.

> **Key Takeaways**
>
> - Google Search answers people who already have the problem. Meta shows an offer to people who did not ask for it.
> - Urgent services, such as a burst pipe or a lockout, usually belong on Google first.
> - Visual, considered services, such as kitchens, garden rooms, aesthetics and events, are where Meta has a real case.
> - Meta instant forms are easy to submit, so expect more leads of weaker average quality unless you add qualifying questions.
> - Judge both platforms on qualified enquiries and jobs won from your own records, and on a small budget test one channel properly rather than two badly.

## What is the real difference between Meta Ads and Google Ads?

Google Search captures demand; Meta creates it. On Google, the person has already typed something like "emergency electrician Leeds", and you are bidding to be one of the answers. The need exists before your ad appears, so your job is to be relevant, visible and easy to contact.

On Facebook and Instagram, nobody is searching. People are scrolling past friends, news and videos, and your ad interrupts them. The need usually does not exist yet, or exists vaguely ("we should sort the garden out one day"). The ad has to create the reason to act, which is why the offer and the creative carry far more weight on Meta.

Targeting follows from that. Google starts with keywords: what people say they want. Meta starts with people: location, age and the interests and behaviour the platform infers, plus whatever its algorithm learns from who responds. Neither is better in general. The mistake I see most often is choosing between them on click price or a friend's experience rather than on how your own customers buy.

## Which platform suits urgent local services?

For emergency and urgent trades, Google Search is usually the right first spend, and often the only one worth paying for. Someone with water coming through the ceiling is not scrolling Instagram hoping to see a plumber. They are on Google, on a phone, calling the first credible business that answers.

That covers emergency plumbers, locksmiths, drainage, boiler breakdowns, glaziers after a break-in and roof leak repairs. Demand is sudden, local and ready to buy today. Meta cannot know that this person's boiler failed this morning, so it can only show your ad to lots of people whose boilers are fine.

What makes Google work here is unglamorous: tight location targeting, ads that match the service searched, a page with the phone number at the top, calls answered, and weekly review of the [search terms report](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2472708) to cut out searches that were never going to become jobs. If calls are your main lead source, count calls of a meaningful length rather than every tap on the number. A three-second misdial is not an enquiry.

Meta can play a small supporting role for an urgent trade, such as promoting boiler servicing before winter. That is closer to brand work, hard to measure on a small budget, and it should not come before search is working.

## When does Meta Ads make more sense than Google Ads?

Meta earns its place when the service is considered, visual and not urgent: kitchens and bathrooms, garden rooms, landscaping, driveways, loft conversions, aesthetics, wedding and event venues, party hire. People buy these after weeks or months of thinking, and they often decide they want one after seeing somebody else's.

That is the gap Meta fills. Plenty of people who would happily pay for a new patio have never searched for one, because the idea has not formed yet. A good photograph of a finished job in their town can form it. Google cannot show an ad to a search that has not happened.

Three things make Meta far more likely to work:

- **Real visual proof.** Photos and short videos of your own finished work, used with the customer's permission. Stock images look like every other advert.
- **A clear offer.** "Free design visit for garden rooms in North Leeds" gives someone a reason to act. "Quality landscaping services" does not.
- **A job value that can absorb a slower funnel.** Meta leads usually need more follow-up before they become customers.

Some sectors carry extra rules. In the UK, prescription-only medicines such as botulinum toxin cannot be advertised to the public, which limits what an aesthetics clinic can say on either platform, and Meta has its own policies on cosmetic procedures and before and after imagery. Check these before building creative.

Google still matters for these businesses, because people do search "kitchen fitters near me" once they are ready. A common pattern is Google for those already looking and Meta for the larger group who have not started.

## How does lead quality differ between instant forms and landing pages?

Meta instant forms (lead ads) open inside Facebook or Instagram and prefill details such as name, email and phone number from the person's profile. Submitting takes seconds, so they tend to produce more leads at a lower cost per lead than sending people to your website. The catch is that easy to submit also means easy to submit without much thought. People tap through, forget they did it, or leave an old number.

A landing page asks for more effort: leave the app, read the page, then fill in a form or call. Fewer people do it, but those who do have usually read what you offer, where you work and what happens next. On Google Search every click goes to a page anyway, so this trade-off is mostly a Meta decision.

If you use instant forms, add some friction on purpose:

- Ask one or two qualifying questions, such as postcode and type of job.
- Use Meta's form setting that adds a review step before submission.
- Say what happens next and who will call.
- Call quickly. Meta leads cool fast because the person was not actively shopping.

Whichever route you choose, measure quality in your own records: how many enquiries were in your area, reachable and a real job. A low cost per lead means little if nobody answers the phone. The [Google Ads landing page checklist](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/journal/google-ads-landing-page-checklist) covers what a paid destination needs before traffic arrives, and anything a form collects should be handled in line with the ICO's [UK GDPR guidance](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/uk-gdpr-guidance-and-resources/).

## How do you track results on each platform?

Both platforms need a verified conversion action before any spend, and both become more accurate when you send data from your own systems rather than relying only on the browser.

### Google Ads: conversion tracking and enhanced conversions

Set up [conversion tracking](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722022) on the actions that matter, such as a completed quote form and a call of meaningful length, and test each with a real submission. Then add [enhanced conversions for leads](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9888656), which captures hashed contact details from the form so that when an enquiry later becomes a customer, that outcome can be matched back to the ad click. The account then learns from what becomes work, not just from what fills in forms.

### Meta Ads: the Pixel plus the Conversions API

The Meta Pixel records actions in the browser, which ad blockers, privacy settings and consent choices increasingly interrupt. The [Conversions API](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/2041148702652965) sends events from your server or other systems directly to Meta. Running both, with deduplication so one event is not counted twice, gives a fuller picture. It can also pass back later stages, such as a lead that became qualified, so the platform is not optimising for form fills alone.

### Use one yardstick for both

Each platform reports the conversions it believes it caused. Compare them on figures from your own records instead: qualified enquiries, jobs won and revenue, by source. On the Procon account, revenue is reported from the client's own revenue reports rather than the ad platform. That is why, when a site rebuild once silently broke conversion tagging, the reported number stayed trustworthy until the fault was caught.

## How should you test Meta Ads against Google Ads on a budget?

Decide the test before spending anything. Write down the channel, the budget cap, how long it runs and what counts as a pass, in cost per qualified enquiry or jobs won rather than clicks or reach.

1. **Start where demand already exists.** If people search for your service, Google Search usually gives a faster, clearer read. Add Meta later as a second test.
2. **Do not split a small budget across both.** Two underfunded campaigns produce two inconclusive results.
3. **Give each platform what it needs.** Google needs a tidy keyword list, [negative keywords](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2453972) and a relevant page. Meta needs several creative variations and a real offer, because the creative does much of the targeting work.
4. **Allow for the sales cycle.** An emergency call converts the same day; a kitchen may take weeks. Judge Meta for a considered service on booked visits and quotes, not only on signed jobs inside the window.
5. **Set a stop rule.** If the pass mark is not met by the end date, change one thing or stop.

I applied that to the studio itself. Lucent ran paid social for its own enquiries and stopped it when it produced none, as written up in [is Google Ads worth it for a small business](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/journal/is-google-ads-worth-it-for-small-business). The lesson was about fit rather than the platform: interrupting people who were not looking was the wrong tool for that service.

## Meta Ads vs Google Ads: a decision table

| Your situation | Start with | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Emergency trade (plumber, locksmith, drainage, boiler breakdown) | Google Search | The customer is searching now and wants to call |
| Planned but searched-for service (roof replacement, boiler install) | Google Search | Clear search demand; consider Meta once search works |
| Visual home improvement (kitchens, garden rooms, landscaping, driveways) | Google first if search demand is healthy, then test Meta | Search catches ready buyers; Meta reaches people not yet looking |
| Aesthetics clinic | Depends on treatments and advertising rules | Meta can suit visual, non-prescription treatments; check UK rules first |
| Events, venues, party hire | Meta, with Google for "near me" and branded searches | Inspiration happens in the feed |
| A new service people do not search for yet | Meta | Google cannot show ads to searches that do not happen |
| No photos or video of your own work | Google Search | Meta depends on credible creative |
| Small budget, one channel only | Wherever customers already look, usually Google | One funded test beats two thin ones |
| Leads cannot be tracked yet | Neither | Fix measurement first |

## What does a working account look like?

My published paid-media evidence is on Google Ads. [Procon 24/7, a volumetric concrete supplier](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/work/procon-247) across Yorkshire and the North West, recorded £1,337,693 of tracked revenue on £150,443 of ad spend from 2022 to September 2026: an 8.9x return and 2,055 new customers. That is one client's result in one sector, not a forecast for anyone else.

The method is the useful part: enhanced conversions on the quote forms, Google forwarding numbers counting only calls of 60 seconds or more, paid-only landing pages for each campaign town, single-city ad groups and weekly search-term and negative keyword work. One lesson I own: call tracking should have gone in during month one.

There is no Meta Ads case study on this site because I have not published one. If you are weighing Meta, the [Facebook and Instagram ads management](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/meta-ads-management) page explains the readiness check that comes first, including when the answer is not to spend.

## Where should you start?

Ask how your best customers found you last year. If they searched, start on Google: [PPC management](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/ppc-management) begins with a [free Google Ads audit](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/google-ads-audit), which can conclude that you should not spend yet. The fee is flat, given on the audit call and never a percentage of ad spend, and the account stays in your name. If customers bought after seeing something they liked, Meta deserves a controlled test. Either way, fix tracking first and judge the result on real jobs.

[Ask David](https://lucentdigital.co.uk/contact)

**01 Is Meta Ads or Google Ads better for a local business?**

Neither is better in general. Google Ads suits services people already search for, especially urgent ones. Meta Ads suits considered, visual services where the advert has to create the interest. Start where your customers already look.

**02 Are Facebook ad leads lower quality than Google Ads leads?**

Often, when they come from instant forms, because prefilled forms are easy to submit without much thought. Qualifying questions, a review step and fast follow-up help. Judge both platforms on qualified enquiries in your own records, not on cost per lead.

**03 Should a small business run Meta Ads and Google Ads at the same time?**

On a small budget, usually not at first. Fund one channel properly with a set cap, time window and pass mark, then add the second once the first is measured and working.

**04 Do I need the Conversions API if I already have the Meta Pixel?**

It is worth adding. The Pixel relies on the browser, which ad blockers, privacy settings and consent choices can interrupt. The Conversions API sends events from your own systems, and deduplication stops the same event being counted twice.

**05 Does Lucent have a Meta Ads case study?**

No. Lucent has not published a Meta Ads case study. The published paid-media evidence is a Google Ads account, Procon 24/7, which is one client's result rather than a forecast.
